Microneedling: Everything You Need to Know

Microneedling has become an extremely popular skin procedure across the world to target dark spots, visible pores and wrinkles.

But what’s all the hype about and what should you look for when deciding where to book for this advanced skin treatment?

How Microneedling works

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine needles to make minuscule, evenly-spaced micro-injuries to the skin. This triggers the body’s wound-healing process, stimulates healthy surrounding tissue to repair the damage, and brings the skin back to its healthiest-looking state.

This repair process helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, wrinkles, sagging, and texture irregularities such as acne pitting or stretch marks.

Recent studies have proven that Microneedling is effective in targeting the melanocytes responsible for melanin overproduction, which means you can achieve brighter, more even-toned skin.

Wondering exactly what’s happening beneath the skin’s surface as a result of Microneedling?

Here’s what to expect during a PRO microneedling treatment

1. Pre-Consultation. Your Professional Skin Therapist will examine your skin and determine suitability. A patch test for advanced resurfacing may be performed. You will be advised on how best to prepare your skin prior to your treatment for best results.

2. Procedure
  1. Consultation: Safety and suitability of treatment are reassessed, and photos of your skin are taken.
  2. Prep: Your skin will be cleansed and analysed then degreased and resurfaced with an appropriate level of chemical peel.
  3. Treatment: PRO Restore is applied to strengthen the skin then applied again during the microneedling procedure. An appropriate needle size and depth are used to target your skin health goals. Your professional skin therapist will administer the microneedling tool directly and evenly across your skin, using the exclusive Dermalogica technique to achieve the best results. The skin is then wiped with sterile saline solution on gauze, and a final PRO Restore is applied.
3. After Care. Most people require little downtime, if any. You may see redness for a few days after the procedure, which is a natural response. Your Professional Skin Therapist will review your post-procedure steps, including how and when to use your PRO Restore and what to avoid for the next 24-72 hours. Results will be visible within two weeks. It’s recommended to book a series of PRO Microneedling treatments four weeks apart for optimal improvements and skin maintenance.

After your treatment, you’ll receive two tubes of PRO Restore to enhance your post-treatment care at home, all included in the price!

Dermalogica PRO Microneedling FAQ

Do I need a consultation?

Yes. This is a really important part of the treatment, both for you and for us. This is very much an opportunity to ask us any questions and discuss any concerns, and we in turn will take time to fully explain the treatment, what it entails and if the treatment is suitable for you. You will also be advised how many treatments are recommended for the specific skin concerns you have.

Are there any side effects?

Microneedling is safe, with minimal side effects or risks associated. The skin will be red in appearance for a couple of hours following microneedling treatment, with some minor bleeding and bruising possible. The area will feel warm, dry or tight for a short while.

Other side effects typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin, with scab formation in rare cases. If you have a history of cold sores, this could possibly flare up after treatment.

Is there anyone who is unable to have microneedling?

Microneedling is suitable for most skin types, however, it is not suitable for clients who:

Have used Roaccutane (isotretinoin)
within the last 6 months.
Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions to the skin.
Have had radiation treatment within the last year.
Have a current outbreak of herpes simplex (cold sores) active acne, or any other infection or chronic skin condition in the area to be treated.
Have areas of the skin that are numb or lack sensation.
Are pregnant or breast feeding.
Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing.

How does it work?

The micro channels cause keratinocytes and fibroblasts to produce numerous growth factors to induce collagen and elastin production, that in turn generate new skin cells to repair itself. Blood supply is also enhanced without leaving any damage to the epidermis at all. Over the following weeks the skin becomes thicker, plumper and more youthful.

What does the procedure involve?

Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, and skin resurfacing will take place before the microneedling choosing a suitable peel for your concerns from our pro power collection or we will use our accelerator exfoliant 35. The pro pen is then repeatedly rolled over the skin to produce thousands of micro-medical needle-channels in the skin.

Each column will penetrate into the dermis of the skin and will be approximately 0.1mm – 0.8 in width. The column will close rapidly enabling the skin to recover quickly - often in the same day. The skin will be cleansed following the treatment, and the appropriate skin care applied, enabling the products to sink deep into the dermal layers.

How many treatments will need?

The number of Microneedling treatments you need depends on several factors, including your age, the area being treated, your skin's condition, and any existing damage.

Generally, a series of 4 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart, is recommended for lasting and visible results.

To maintain these effects, a one-off treatment every 3 months is advised.

The exact number will always be tailored to your unique skin and personal goals, ensuring the best outcome from your treatment course.

How long does it take to see results?

This will depend on your cell renewal process, as this slows down as we age. In general it can take up to 4-8 weeks to see any results, however the regeneration process will continue over the following months giving a gradual enhancement. It is important to have a good skincare routine in place to maintain and enhance the results of this service.

What are the post care procedures?

During your consultation and after the service our skin expert will provide you with full post care instructions.

Use only tepid water to cleanse the face for the next 48 hours and pat dry using a clean towel
Use the aftercare product we provide you with for the next 7 days
It is recommended make-up is not applied for at least 12 hours
A high factor SPF must be used following the treatment
Do not touch the area immediately after treatment
It is not recommended that you participate in high impact exercise for 12 hours following the treatment

How will I look after the treatment?

Immediately following the treatment, you will have some redness and possibility sensitivity which is very normal and expected. There is also a chance of slight pin prick bleeding during the treatment mostly on more sensitive areas of the face, again this expected and very normal.

The skin will feel warm and slightly tight.

This will normally reduce within the same day, with only slight redness the following day. You can return to most normal activities that day.

Does microneedling really work?

Microneedling is supported by clinical studies, and shown to be an effective non-surgical and non-ablative treatment for a variety of skin conditions. These include ageing, (wrinkles, fine lines, and stretch marks), scarring (ache and surgical), as well as cellulite and hyperpigmentation.

Studies have also shown that microneedling is often a better treatment than dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. It is proven to be just as effective in its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Regular microneedling can thicken skin, smooth scars of all sizes, and erase wrinkles.

What conditions can be treated?

Our Microneedling Treatments can address a variety of conditions including but not limited to:

A reduction in acne and chicken pox scarring
Helps to tighten the skin and restore elasticity to ageing and sun damaged skin
Reduces the appearance of stretch marks
Softens tine lines on the face, hands and décolleté
Helps to reduce lines and wrinkles
Reduction in the appearance of scarring
Helps reduce pigmentation marks
Improve the overall skin texture

Where can the treatment be performed on?

The treatment can be carried out anywhere on the body, however the usual and most popular areas are the face, neck, décolleté and hands. It is also used on thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen.

Does it hurt?

It can be uncomfortable in certain areas of your face. However, the treatment is fairly quick, and your professional skin therapist will work with you and your skin, progressing the treatment over time.

How much downtime is there?

There’s no significant downtime with this minimally invasive procedure. You may experience some mild redness and irritation for 2 – 3 days after Microneedling, but this will subside quickly. When receiving Dermalogica’s PRO Microneedling treatment PRO Restore is included as part of your aftercare program. This advanced formula helps minimize downtime and skin recovery with enhanced results. It’s vital you follow the post-treatment home care routine provided to you by your professional skin therapist – this is as important as the treatment itself for maintaining and enhancing your results.

Can’t i just use an ‘at home’ roller for the same effect?

At-home microneedling tools may consist of either a stamp studded with tiny metal spikes of different lengths or a roller (for “Dermarolling”.) Dermatologists agree that these may not bring you the advanced results you’d get from a professional treatment. Why? Primarily because the devices built for “at-home” use have shorter needle depths that vary between 0.1 mm-0.3mm and are designed mainly to enhance skin-care ingredient absorption, not create the ‘micro-injuries’ needed for skin remodeling.

In contrast, professional Microneeding tools use needles ranging from 0.5mm-3mm that perforate the skin at deeper levels and require advanced professional qualifications and training to deliver safe and effective treatment. Microneedling should only be administered by a qualified professional in a sterile environment.

Can I have microneedling if I have diabetes?

If you have Type 2 diabetes and it is well-controlled with medication, you are welcome to receive microneedling treatments at our salon. Please ensure you bring a doctor's note to your PRO Microneedling consultation confirming that it's safe for you to proceed with the treatment.

For clients with Type 1 diabetes, we do not recommend microneedling due to the potential issues with healing from treatments that can cause skin trauma.

Please contact your GP to discuss any specific concerns you may have regarding your condition and microneedling treatments.

Below is the information you can give your doctor about the treatment:

Microneedling uses skin-needling devices to perforate the skin creating thousands of pinprick, fractional wounds (micro-injuries) that trigger an inflammatory reaction. This inflammatory response initiates natural repair processes that promote skin rejuvenation. It is often described as a non-ablative treatment as it creates controlled damage to skin tissue without removal of the protective epidermis. It is known by many names including Skin Needling, Micro Needling or Collagen Induction Therapy.

Can I have Botox or fillers before my treatment?

For PRO Microneedling treatments, you cannot have Botox or fillers for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your treatment.

This is because it takes time for Botox and fillers to settle into the skin properly. If we don't allow enough time for them to settle, there's a risk of moving the Botox or fillers around in the skin, which we want to avoid.
